Speed cameras added to community safety zones in Wellington County

Heavy-footed drivers may have to mind their speed or be prepared to pay up as speed cameras have been added to community safety zones in Wellington County.

Seven locations have been chosen for the safety features, but so far only four cameras are up and running.

The county said Coming Soon signs were installed 90 days before the cameras went live, giving drivers a heads up about the latest infrastructure.

Operational cameras:

• Belsyde Avenue East from Highway 6 to McTavish Street, Centre Wellington
• Brock Road South from 225 metres north of Old Brock Road to 300 metres south of Old Brock Road, Puslinch
• Main Street from Henry Street to York Street, Minto
• Sligo Road East from 50 metres west of Church Street North to 125 metres west of London Road North, Wellington North

Planned locations:

• Wellington Street South from Andrews Drive to Spring Street, Mapleton
• Main Street North from 30 metres west of Rockmosa Drive to 20 metres west of Edgar Bonner Ave, Guelph Eramosa
• Trafalgar Road from Church Street to 75 metres north of Jane Street, Erin

In an email on Wednesday, the county told CTV News Kitchener the planned locations still require approval from Hydro One. They expect all cameras will be live by the end of the month.

What happens if a speeding driver is caught by a camera?

If a vehicle is caught exceeding the speed limit, the owner of the vehicle will receive a penalty order, regardless of who was driving the vehicle at the time.

The order will come in the mail and include details about the offence, the fine amount and how to pay the fine.

Demerit points are not part of the penalty. A fine from the speed cameras should also not impact insurance premiums.

The fine amount is determined by the number km/h the vehicle was travelling over the posted speed limit. There is also a victim component surcharge and an $8.25 administrative fee.

Fines can be paid through the county’s Penalty Order page.

Vehicle owners can ask for an appeal review if they disagree with the fine. They will need to book a review with a screening or hearing officer online or by calling 1-877-748-1025.

A request for a review must be made no later than 30 days after the penalty order was served.
