Rangers reach milestone season, clinch top seed with decisive win

The Rangers closed out their regular season on a high note after defeating the Firebirds 6-2 Tuesday night, all while marking a major milestone.

The Kitchener Rangers are closing out their regular season on a high note after securing a major milestone and home-ice advantage for the playoffs.

The team defeated the Flint Firebirds 6-2 Tuesday night at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium, marking the first time in franchise history the Rangers have reached 100 points in back-to-back seasons. The win also clinches top spot in the Western Conference.

Kitchener set the tone early, scoring twice in the first period. Cameron Reid added another goal to extend the lead before Flint responded.

The Rangers continued to pull ahead in the second period, building a two-goal cushion heading into the final 20 minutes. They held the Firebirds scoreless in the third, adding two more goals to seal the win.

The game has included a moment of recognition for billet families — community members who open their homes to players from out of town.

The Rangers thanked the families, calling their role an important part of the team’s success.

The Rangers have two games remaining in the regular season. They return home Friday to face the Sarnia Sting before travelling to Owen Sound on Saturday to close out the schedule.

Downtown event brings team to fans

Meanwhile, the team is set to connect with the community off the ice on Wednesday.

The second annual Downtown Showdown will take place at Carl Zehr Square, featuring a three-on-three road hockey tournament with Rangers players, along with autograph sessions and family-friendly activities.

Attendees can also enjoy live music from DJ and performer The Trevor Show, get their fill of hot chocolate and maple taffy, interact with firefighters and police and see the city’s electric Zamboni up close.

Weather permitting, the Carl Zehr Square ice rink will be open for a community skate. Kitchener Minor Hockey will also be on-site grilling hot dogs available for a donation to the organization.

The free event runs from noon to 5 p.m.
