Police investigating six reports of taxi fare scam in Kitchener

People in Kitchener are being warned to be vigilant as a scam has cropped up in the city again.

The Waterloo Regional Police Service said they are investigating at least six reports of a taxi fare scam. They say the reports came in around 5 p.m. on Jan. 15.

Victims told police they were approached by people asking for help paying a taxi fare. The victims handed over their debit card to pay the fare and were given cash in exchange. However, investigators said the transactions were fraudulent.

The investigation into these incidents is ongoing.

Meanwhile, police are also responding to other incidents in the region where people said they have been offered fake jewelry as gifts. They said when the person making the offer tried to put the fake jewelry on the victim, the suspects steal jewelry the victim had already been wearing.
