‘Picture a horror film’: WRPS constables testify in 2022 triple stabbing

Officers told the court what they saw when they arrived at a triple stabbing in Kitchener, Ont. CTV’s Spencer Turcotte explains.

Four Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) constables took the stand on Wednesday in a second-degree murder trial.

Dylon Moreira is accused of stabbing his mother, his girlfriend and his girlfriend’s daughter at a Kitchener home on Nov. 15, 2022. The girl’s mother died from her stab wounds.

CTV News is not naming the two adult victims as they might inadvertently reveal the child’s identity, which is protected by a publication ban.

Moreira is charged with second-degree murder for his girlfriend’s death, as well as two counts of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated assault.

Officer testimony

All of the officers who testified on Wednesday attended the scene on Cayley Court nearly three years ago.

First on the stand was Const. Ashley Vanderkolk, who was new to the role when she was called to the triple stabbing.

“When you picture a horror film - I just remember seeing blood everywhere,” Vanderkolk told court.

She testified that she saw Moreira’s girlfriend being attended to by paramedics at the scene, but she was not showing any vital signs.

Vanderkolk accompanied the girlfriend in the ambulance on the ride to the hospital.

When crown prosecutor Thomas Mack asked whether Moreira’s girlfriend regained consciousness at all during the ride Vanderkolk told court, “Not from my understanding.”

Const. Andrew Christman testified he noticed a male, determined to be Moreira, injured at the bottom of a set of stairs when he walked into the Cayley Court home.

“A lot of blood. A lot of chaos,” he told court, recalling that night.

Christman testified that as he got closer with a medical bag to assess Moreira’s injuries, he became aggressive.

“He began swinging his arms in my direction, trying to grab on to me,” said Christman.

During cross-examination defence lawyer Stephen Gehl asked Christman whether he caused any of the cuts or contusions to Moreira’s face.

“I did not cause them, no,” he testified.

The crown then called Const. Brent Reeve to the stand, who said he saw Moreira with a bandage on his head, yelling, and asking for help from his mother.

Const. Reeve also recalled seeing a knife in the basement: “[It] was smeared with blood.”

A couple of the officers told court they remembered seeing dogs inside the house.

Const. Taylor Smith testified that one dog’s neck was injured.

“The blood was kind of spraying out of its neck,” Smith said.

As Smith made his way throughout the house to help secure the scene, he noted blood spatters in various parts.

“The window frame was covered in blood,” said Smith. “The children’s area, there was a significant amount of blood.”

The trial is expected to resume on Friday.
