Judge reviewing extensive materials in trial of former neurologist accused of sexually assaulting patients

It will still be some time before there is a verdict for the former neurologist accused of sexually assaulting 50 of his female patients during appointments at his office in Kitchener.

Jeffrey Sloka, who also goes by Scott Sloka, had a brief court appearance Friday, to update where things stand in the case.

The defense has now provided all of its written submissions and the crown will now work on responses.

While some dates in February had been set aside for oral submissions from the crown and defense, Justice Craig Parry indicated he will instead use that time to go over the extensive materials he’s been provided in this case.

Sloka’s case will return to court on February 28 to determine the next steps, but Justice Parry indicated that given the amount of submissions, more fulsome discussions will likely not happen until June or August.

The trial, which is by judge alone, began in September 2021.

Court heard from former patients who described being inappropriately draped or completely naked while receiving breast exams, vaginal exams or other procedures.

Sloka also took the stand in his defense, denying some incidents happened, or providing medical reasons for why he performed certain exams.

The evidence portion was completed on October 5, 2023.

Sloka originally pleaded not guilty to 63 counts of sexual assault, though some of those charges have since been dropped.

This case is believed to be one of the largest sexual assault investigations in the province.
