Hundreds of tickets handed out as communities clean up following snow storm

As the clean up continues following a snowstorm, CTV’s Jeff Pickel learns how many people were ticketed for parking on the street.

Hundreds of drivers woke up to tickets after a snow storm hit Waterloo Region.

On Friday, crews across the region continued trying to shift the snow, but those efforts were complicated by cars left on city streets.

Waterloo, Kitchener and Cambridge declared snow events on Thursday. That meant drivers had to move their vehicles off the street or risk being ticketed or towed.

Despite the warning, hundreds of tickets were handed out in the City of Waterloo.

“A snow event was declared yesterday at noon and municipal enforcement has issued almost 300 tickets in that time,” Nicole Papke, director of municipal enforcement at the City of Waterloo, said.

Papke stressed how important it is for drivers to adhere to the parking bans as crews try to make the roads safe for all users.

“The roads are pretty slippery right now as well,” Papke said. “So [keeping vehicles off the road] is helping with our plow operators. It’s pretty challenging operating a plow.”

The City of Waterloo extended their snow event at 10:50 a.m. Friday. If it is not extended again, it will remain in effect until noon on Saturday.

The City of Cambridge also extended their snow event until 7 a.m. Saturday.

The City of Kitchener cancelled their snow event and lifted the parking ban on Friday afternoon.
