Here’s how many snow events have been declared in Waterloo Region this year so far

Snow warnings and squalls continue as another polar plunge in temperatures sweeps through southwestern Ontario.

Waterloo Region has been no stranger to wintery weather this season. From the first major snowfall in November to a series of flurries and frigid temperatures in January, there has been little reprieve so far.

Municipalities within the region have declared a higher number of snow events this season compared to recent years, leaving drivers struggling to find places to store their vehicles as on-street parking was banned for days while crews cleared roads.

Snow event parking bans are in effect for at least 24 hours, and those who don’t comply could face fines and may have their vehicles towed.

Since late November, the City of Kitchener has had seven snow events so far, including the most recent one declared on Jan. 21.

In the last five years, Kitchener saw an average total of five snow events between November and April.

“Since November, a series of weather systems have significantly increased the demand for the city’s winter maintenance operations,” a news release from the city stated. “These frequent weather events have required crews to be deployed repeatedly and for extended periods, placing pressure on both staff and resources.”

Cambridge has also seen seven snow events this season, while Waterloo has declared six.

As for the townships, Wellesley declared five snow events so far, while Wilmot and North Dumfries have only declared two each. Woolwich saw three significant weather events and two parking bans, including the current event that has been extended until Friday night.

The City of Waterloo also extended their snow event and street parking ban on Thursday. It will be in effect for at least another 24 hours.

Clearing techniques hampered by salt shortage, increased snow events

Due to the ongoing road salt shortage in Ontario, some cities are switching to other methods of melting ice and clearing roads.

In a news release, the City of Kitchener said it will increase the use of sand on main roads and roads with steep hills or sharp curves.

As for plowing, Kitchener residents can expect to see “more snow-packed conditions” on back roads and residential streets, while main roads will appear “track bare” more often.
