Businesses in Waterloo Region expect a boost in sales for Super Bowl

It’s an all-American event but the big game is still a big boost for businesses in Waterloo Region. CTV’s Colton Wiens explains.

The excitement for Super Bowl Sunday keeps growing and businesses in Waterloo Region couldn’t be happier.

The big game may be an all-American event, but it brings a welcome mid-winter boost to businesses, at a slower time of year.

The Super Bowl is one of the biggest events of the year for Morty’s Pub in Waterloo.

“We’re doing a lot of chicken wings on super bowl. It’s our absolutely busiest day of the year for chicken wings,” Jay Taylor, Co-Owner of Morty’s Pub said.

On Sunday, they’re expecting to sell up to one ton of wings, double the number they normally would.

“Probably 6,000 to 7,000 to 8,000 chicken wings,” Taylor said.

The big game, with the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles, will be on in the pub, but space will likely fill up quickly.

“We are booking up already as we speak. So give us a call if you want a reservation,” Taylor said.

If you’re planning to stay home during the big game but still want some food, ForeQuarter Butcher Shop in Kitchener is busy preparing for orders.

“We’ve got a lot of different things going on. We got lots of wings. We have souse vide pork back ribs, that we make our own rub, and then we sous vide them. So they’re already cooked and ready to go. You just got to reheat them,” said Colby LeMoine, owner of ForeQuarter Butcher Shop.

LeMoine said this time of year can be slow, so events like Super Bowl and Valentine’s Day help boost sales. He also expects a lot of last-minute orders.

“We try to encourage people to order ahead of time. We have an online store where you can order ahead of time for your chicken wings and pork shoulders and all that,” LeMoine said.

There’s also been a last-minute rush to get a big flat screen television. Gibson Sound and Vision in Waterloo said they’re usually busy from Boxing Day until the Super Bowl.

“It has been (busy), which is great because everyone wants to have a big, big TV for the actual super bowl,” Brian Lane, Senior Project Manager at Gibson Sound and Vision said.

Super Bowl 59 will kickoff at 6:30 p.m. Sunday Night.
