Wild weather: Istanbul’s first snowfall in several years

This week's wild weather includes snow in Türkiye, a winter storm in Pennsylvania and flooding in Botswana.

A severe winter storm packing freezing rain caused all kinds of problems on roads in Pennsylvania, including for one driver whose windshield was shattered by a block of ice flying off tractor-trailor.

The driver was left with some cuts and bruises, but not seriously injured. A lack of road salt is partly to blame for the icy conditions and New York’s governor declared an emergency due to the lack of supply.

Days of heavy rain in Botswana led to widespread flooding.

At least seven people are dead and thousands of residents are out of their homes.

Several centimetres of rain forcing school and road closures.

Numerous homes and businesses have suffered extensive damage.

A snowstorm in Istanbul, Türkiye closed schools, caused problems of roadways and delayed flights.

Officials warning residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary. Twenty to 40 centimetres of snow was reported in parts of the city and, although parts of Türkiye do get snow, this was Istanbul’s first measurable snowfall in several years.

The same storm system also brought snow to parts of Syria, Lebanon and some mountainous regions in Jordan.
