Wild weather: Record snowfall, heat wave, flooding

Published:

This week's wild weather includes historic snowfall in the U.S. and a heat wave in Argentina.

Here’s a look at some of the big weather stories making headlines this past week:

Historic snowfall in parts of southern Texas and Louisiana.

Blizzard warnings were issued for the first time ever in a few regions. Beaches near Galveston, Texas were covered in snow and so was Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

In fact, New Orleans had a record-setting 10 inches of snow. Airports were shut down, impacting thousands of flights.

Highways travel was also suspended with many bridges and roads considered impassable.

The same storm system also brought snowfall warnings to parts of Florida.

Argentina is facing a heat wave that has led to widespread power outages.

Temperatures have been in the 35 to 40 degree range and the region is also in a prolonged dry spell.

The heat and drought are expected to have a significant impact on soy, corn and wheat crops.

The hot, dry conditions have also been a factor in some large wildfires in Argentina’s Patagonia region.

Those fires spread rapidly thanks to some strong wind. Hundreds of homes in the region have been evacuated with dozens of homes destroyed by the flames.

A state of emergency was declared in southern Brazil following devastating flooding.

More the 120 millimetres of rain fell in a span of just a few hours. That’s over 12 centimetres of rain.
