Wild weather: Deadly flooding and landslides

CTV Edmonton's Josh Classen recaps a week of wild weather: a storm on the U.S. east coast, Cyclone Ditwah and a developing crisis on Sumatra.

Storm on east coast

A powerful Nor’easter slammed the U.S. east coast and parts of Atlantic Canada.

The storm system brought heavy snow to many areas and freezing rain made travel treacherous. Hundreds of collisions were reported across multiple states.

In West Virginia, a semi-trailer lost control on an icy highway bridge leaving the cab hanging over the edge with the driver trapped inside for several hours.

Cyclone Ditwah

The death toll from flooding and mudslides caused by Cyclone Ditwah continues to climb.

Over 360 people are dead in Sri Lanka and hundreds more are missing.

More than one million people have been affected by the flooding and nearly a quarter-million people have been displaced.

The government has closed schools and offices, and some train service and roadways have been bee shut down.

Disaster on Sumatra

In Indonesia, more than 700 people have been killed by floods and landslides on the island of Sumatra.

More than 500 people remain missing.

Monsoon rains have forced the evacuation of nearly a million people from high-risk areas.

A humanitarian crisis is developing as markets are running out of food and essentials in many areas.
