Red Deer seniors facility visitors warned of possible measles exposure

Visitors of a seniors assisted-living facility in Red Deer at the start of May have been advised to monitor for measles symptoms.

They may have been exposed to measles at The Hamlets on Liberty Avenue on:

• April 30, between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m.;
• May 1, from 4 p.m. and 10 p.m.; and
• May 2, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Those most at risk consist of anyone who was born in or after 1970 and has fewer than two measles vaccine doses, or has never had measles.

The disease is extremely contagious and spreads easily through the air.

Symptoms may include a fever of 38.3 C or higher; a cough, runny nose and/or red eyes; a rash that appears three to seven days after the fever starts.

Anyone with measles symptoms should stay at home and call Alberta’s measles hotline at 1-844-944-3434 before attending a health-care facility.
