Moose spotted in Edmonton appeared ‘calm and non-aggressive’: fish and wildlife

Alberta Fish and Wildlife said it wasn't planning to remove a moose seen in southwest Edmonton Wednesday morning since it was acting "calm and non-aggressive."

A moose was seen acting touristy in southwest Edmonton Wednesday, walking through the park and taking a dip in a pond.

In the morning Tammy Neron said she was sitting inside having coffee and saw the moose through the window “just trot on by.”

“I was definitely shocked,” she said. “There is a lot of wildlife in the area, we’ve seen coyotes a lot, we see beavers in the ponds, and so there are moose in Edmonton, you don’t usually see them this close.”

Neron posted photos of the moose in a neighbourhood group, hoping to encourage people to leave it alone and not stress it out.

“This street is quite busy, so to see a moose is definitely worrisome in this area,” Neron said.

“I was more worried for it, you know? You see an animal stressed out like that, you just want it to be left alone.”

She called 311 to let the city know about the moose, but since it wasn’t causing any harm and no one was harassing it, everything appeared to be OK for the moment.

A spokesperson with Alberta Fish and Wildlife said they received a number of calls about a young moose in the Terwillegar Towne neighbourhood in Tomlinson Park and a nearby stormwater pond.

“The reports indicate that the moose has been calm and non-aggressive and has simply been moving through the area,” Sheena Campbell said.

“Officers have assessed the situation and, given the moose’s current behaviour and location, there’s no intervention plan for the moment.”

As the area the moose was seen in is close to the Whitemud Creek Ravine, the hope is for the moose to use that as a way to get out of the city.

“Fish and wildlife officers will continue to monitor the situation closely,” added Campbell. “In the meantime, we encourage the public to observe the moose from a safe distance, avoid approaching it and keep pets on leash.

A number of moose have been spotted in city limits so far in 2025, some have had to be moved by fish and wildlife officers.
