Measles outbreak hits northern Alberta community: officials

Published:

The Little Red River Cree Nation in northern Alberta says it's dealing with a measles outbreak.

The Little Red River Cree Nation (LRRCN) says it is currently experiencing a measles outbreak.

According to a memo put out by LRRCN officials, the disease is impacting several families at John D’or Prairie, one of three communities that make up the Nation, which sits about 750 kilometres north of Edmonton.

“Members are asked to immunize and remain vigilant, as well as seek medical attention if any symptoms occur,” the letter reads.

The memo says that Health Canada confirmed the outbreak on Sunday.

“Currently, Indigenous Services Canada, Alberta Region, is working with provincial health partners to monitor the situation and support the outbreak response,” the agency wrote in the memo.

According to the most recent monitoring reports from the federal agency, which contain data up until Feb. 22, Alberta had not previously seen any measles cases in 2025.

CTV News Edmonton has reached out to LRRCN officials for comment.
