Alberta Health Services (AHS) says people who flew out of Edmonton the morning of April 2 may have been exposed to measles.
On Friday, AHS issued a release saying it had identified four new cases in the central zone, with one person having spent time in public while infectious.
Anyone who was at the Edmonton International Airport on April 2 between 7 and 11 a.m. may have been exposed, as well as anyone on Sunwing Flight 4387 to Cancun from about 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
There were a total of 58 active measles cases in Alberta on Friday at 2 p.m., prompting Alberta’s chief medical officer of health to issue a statement.
Measles symptoms include fever of 38.3 C or higher, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a rash that appears three to seven days after the fever starts.
Complications of measles can include ear infections, pneumonia, brain inflammation and premature delivery in pregnant people. In rare cases, the infection can be deadly.
AHS said anyone showing symptoms should stay home and call 811 before heading to a health-care facility or pharmacy.
More information on measles vaccines can be found on the AHS website.
