Man charged with fraud after soccer team’s tournament fund disappears

An Edmonton man is facing 12 fraud charges after money disappeared from a local soccer team's tournament fund.

An Edmonton man has been charged with 13 offences after money disappeared from a youth soccer team’s tournament fund.

A warrant is out for Randy Knodel’s arrest, according to court records obtained by CTV News Edmonton.

Knodel was charged with seven counts of fraud over $5,000, five counts of fraud under $5,000 and uttering a forged document.

The charges don’t detail the exact nature of the alleged fraud, but a man with the same name is the coach of the Selects Football Club’s Tier 1 boys team.

The team fundraised approximately $50,000 to attend a soccer tournament in Las Vegas this month.

But days before the trip, the coach and about $40,000 went missing and parents found out the team was never registered and flights and accommodations were not booked, Lauren Scorgie, the manager of the team and mother of one of the players, told CTV News Edmonton.

The team and the league have not heard from the coach since, Adam Scorgie, the manager’s husband, said on Thursday.

A GoFundMe has raised nearly $60,000. The team plans to attend the next edition of the tournament and donate the rest of the money to the local soccer community.
