Josh Classen’s forecast: Another warm one, with some gusts on tap

A high of 11 C in Edmonton this afternoon and more warm days on the way.

It’s a relatively calm and cloudy morning in the Edmonton area as we await the arrival of a cold front that’ll kick up the wind for this afternoon.

We’re expecting gusts around 40 km/h by midday and gusts in the 50 km/h range through the afternoon hours. The wind will gradually ease through the evening and overnight hours.

Wind warnings are in effect for Slave Lake/Athabasca/Whitecourt/Barrhead/Edson areas.

That warning may be extended further southeast through the day.

Further north, Fort McMurray and area NW towards High Level are under a freezing rain warning, with winter storm warnings and snowfall warnings for areas north of Fort McMurray.

The freezing rain risk around Fort McMurray should ease up late this morning, then it’s just a chance of some mixed precipitation or showers in that area this afternoon.

Areas further north could get 10-15 cm of snow by the end of today.

For Edmonton and area, there’s not much chance of precipitation. Skies will likely clear this afternoon and we’ll hit a high of 10 or 11 C early this afternoon, before starting to cool slightly through the late afternoon hours.

Behind the cold front...temperatures won’t change TOO much for Fri/Sat/Sun.

Daytime highs will drop a couple degrees, but I’m still expecting highs in the 7- to 9-degree range for those three days.

Some cooler air moves in aloft early next week and that’ll result in another slight drop to the temperature pattern as we settle into a string of days with afternoons in the 3- to 7-degree range next week.
