The Harcourt House Artist Run Centre in Edmonton has received $1 million from the federal government to buy the building it operates out of.

The federal government has announced $1 million in funding for the Harcourt House Artist Run Centre.

The money, along with $2.5 million fundraised by Harcourt House, will allow the organization to purchase the space it occupies in central Edmonton.

Edmonton-Centre MP Randy Boissonnault made the announcement on Monday morning.

“I am delighted to announce that the Government of Canada will be providing $1 million to W.E.C.A.N. (Where Edmonton Community Artists Network) Society so that you can buy this space and own it for generations to come,” he told onlookers at a news conference.

Harcourt House was launched in 1988 to provide studio, exhibition, and education space for artists in Edmonton.

“This place has had a profound effect on the lives of many people, mine included,” Harcourt House president Edmund Haakonson told the crowd. “Since opening its doors, Harcourt House has supported and promoted visual artists in their work and engaged the public to enrich the lives of all of the citizens of the capital region.”

More information about Harcourt House can be found on the organization’s website.
