Edmonton weather: Warm going in and cool coming out

Today will be Edmonton’s 13th day with an afternoon high above 15 C. It’ll also VERY LIKELY be the last.

Cooler air begins to settle in through the weekend and although there’s a chance we get into the 10-13 C range for one or two days towards the end of next week. Sunday through Friday will mostly be in the 7 to 11 C range for daytime highs.

Sunny with some late-day clouds and a high of 18 or 19 C in Edmonton today, and the wind should stay relatively calm until this evening.

Gusts in the 30 km/h range are possibly this evening and overnight, but those should die down through Saturday morning.

The first of two low-pressure systems sweeps in from the southwest tonight and brings some showers to western and northwestern Alberta tonight and early Saturday. That rain will move into northeastern Alberta by Saturday afternoon.

There’s a slight chance of a brief, scattered shower in the Edmonton area early Saturday morning.

But, we should get some clearing in the afternoon and a high of 12 or 13 C.

The second area of low pressure develops on Sunday and brings the Edmonton region a good chance of some steadier light rain through the morning hours.

We’ll stay cloudy and cool (high of 7 to 9 C) in the afternoon, but most of the rain should move north of the city for the afternoon.

If it doesn’t, we may see some mixed precipitation or snow in the afternoon/evening Sunday.

There’s a much better chance that the precipitation zone is north of us by the time it flips over to snow, but the risk is there.

Some accumulating snow is possible in the Peace Country/Swan Hills/Slave Lake areas and around Fort McMurray late Sunday and through the day Monday.

After Sunday, it looks dry for central and north-central Alberta until the end of next week. The early outlook for Halloween has temperatures up around 10 or 11 C for an afternoon high and then a risk of some precipitation in the evening.
