Edmonton weather: Warm and messy today, with arctic air set to drop in Friday

Snow mixed with pockets of rain right across the Edmonton area and a large portion of central and north-central Alberta this morning.

That’ll continue throughout the morning (and right through the day for some areas) while temperatures hover around or slightly above freezing.

We should get a high of about 3 C in Edmonton this afternoon with some 30 km/h gusts developing later in the day.

That steadier precipitation changes to a chance of flurries or light snow tonight and early Friday morning, with another chance for some flurries Friday evening in the region.

The big weather story for Friday will be the arrival of some arctic air throughout the day. Temperatures will fall to around -12 C by Friday afternoon.

So...everything that’s sloppy and slushy and wet will freeze over and we’ll have some significant icing on roads and sidewalks.

The cold air sticks around through Saturday and early Sunday, but starts to push out late in the day Sunday.

Temperatures should get back to highs in the -2 C to -5 C range for Monday/Tuesday in Edmonton.

Looking out further, the next blast of cold air will probably stick around a lot longer than just two or three days.

Daytime highs are forecast to drop into the -10 C to -15 C range towards the end of next week and that’ll probably be the start of a cold spell that lingers through to at least Dec. 20 (if not longer).
