Edmonton weather: Slippery start to a warm day

Cory Edel has the Edmonton forecast for Friday and the weekend.

Freezing rain has been making it’s way across parts of northern and north-central Alberta through the morning and that includes parts of the Edmonton region.

Freezing rain warnings were issued for a number of areas. That precipitation should move out of the Edmonton region by mid-morning as the system moves off to the east.

Temperatures will climb above 0 C by mid-morning and we’ll get to 7 or 8 C in the city this afternoon.

So the icy road conditions should improve dramatically through the day. However, there may still be some shaded sidewalks, side streets or parkings lots that remain slick throughout the day.

We’ll get some clearing and gusty wind in behind that system. Gusts in the 30-40 km/h range are expected through the afternoon in Edmonton and area.

The wind will ease this evening and we’re in for one last warm weekend before a cold spell settles in.

Both Saturday and Sunday will have morning temperatures just a few degrees below 0 C. Afternoon temperatures will be in the 5-7 C on Saturday and the 3-6 C range on Sunday.

There’s a good amount of uncertainty with the Monday outlook, but daytime highs will slide into the -5 to -10 C range for Wednesday-Sunday of next week. After being warmer than average for the vast majority of November, we’ll end the month on a colder-than-average note.

Here’s the situation with Monday: We’re expecting an area of low pressure to push across either southern or central Alberta with some snow.

However, there’s low confidence in the track of that system and the intensity of the snow. If the system is further south (as the GEM model is projecting), we might only see some flurries in the Edmonton region.

If it’s a bit further north (as the GFS model is projecting), then we could see some heavier snow.

So...we’re in a wait-and-see mode for Monday.
