Edmonton weather: Slight cooldown settles in

Temperatures will remain well above average for early March, but nowhere near as warm as the past few days.

Edmonton had highs of 12 C Saturday and 9 C Sunday.

In fact, we haven’t had a daytime high below 5 C since Feb. 20 (a week and a half ago, just as we came out of the deep freeze).

So, these next few days may FEEL a little “crisp” compared to what we’ve been dealing with.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday should all hit afternoon highs in the 2 to 6 C range as some “cooler” air settles in.

Mornings will slip into the -5 to -8 range Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday.

Another Upper Ridge shoves the cooler air out later this week and afternoon temperatures are expected to get back to the 5 to 10 degree range for Thursday/Friday/Saturday/Sunday.

Average highs for the first week of March are in the -2/-3 range. So, we’ll remain well above that level through this week, despite the cooldown.

Next week is trending toward a more significant drop in temperature. It doesn’t look like a major cold spell. But, daytime highs will probably settle around or just slightly below zero for mid-to-late next week.

Most of the modelling has been picking up on some mid-March cooling for a little while now. So, we’ll watch to see how that develops. There’s confidence in a cool stretch, but more uncertainty with just HOW MUCH cooler.

Snow is the big story for the foothills and areas south of Edmonton today.

There’s some light snow falling between Leduc and Red Deer and some heavier bands of snow between Red Deer and Calgary.

Five to 10 cm is possibly in the foothills through today and 2 to 5 cm is possible around Calgary.

Edmonton and area might see a few scattered flurries early this morning, but we should get some sunny breaks this afternoon and no significant snow is expected over the coming days.

Our next-best chance at getting some accumulating snow doesn’t come until early next week.
