Edmonton weather: Rollercoaster start to October temperatures

The sun will break through the smoke in Edmonton on Wednesday, according to Cory Edel's forecast.

Above-average temperatures will continue in the Edmonton area through the first few days of October, but there’s a cool down coming this weekend.

That’s likely to be followed by another jump in temperatures early next week and then another cool down toward the end of next week.

Bottom line: We’re going to start getting more and more of a taste of autumn winter through the first two weeks of this month.

That shouldn’t really come as a surprise given the fact it’s October. But... it may be a little bit of a shock to the system since we’re coming off a month of September that had the warmest average high of any September in over 50 years.

AND...we had more 20-degree days in September 2025 than any another September on record.

This past September had the same number of 20-degree days and the same average high as July 2025.

It doesn’t look like we’ll see too many (if any) more of those 20-degree days this year. Although, we’ll get into the upper teens (17-19 C range) today, Thursday and Friday.

Tuesday/Wednesday of next week should also get to the upper teens and one of those days might touch 20 C.

Squeezed between those warm days is a return to more seasonal temperatures this coming weekend. Mornings will get close to 0 C (especially Sunday) and afternoon highs will be in the 11-14 C range.

Smoke moved into Edmonton and surrounding regions on Tuesday and we’re still looking at some elevated Air Quality Health Index readings this morning.

That smoke is expected to dissipate through this afternoon and the AQHI forecast is for “low risk” conditions later today and Thursday.

There are some scattered showers in central and north-central Alberta this morning. I think most of the Edmonton region will stay dry this morning, but a few spots will get some precipitation.

The same holds true for this evening as we have a chance of a hit-n-miss shower in the region.
