Edmonton weather: Milder air moves in early next week

The snow and cold have arrived. Cory Edel has Edmonton's Friday and weekend forecast.

The snow is here. As I wrote last week, it’s extremely rare to get into December without snow on the ground in the Edmonton area.

We’ve only had snow on the ground by Nov. 15 in five of the past 10 years. But, there’s been snow on the ground by Dec. 1 in nine of the past 10 years.

There’s still a few flurries in the Edmonton region early this morning, but that should move out by mid-morning. Cloudy and a high near -8 C this afternoon... so not much change from this morning.

Heavier snow continues to fall across southern Alberta through the day.

Snowfall warnings and blowing snow advisories remain in effect.

We should get some clearing overnight in the Edmonton area and some sun through the weekend.

But, those clearer skies will allow temperatures to slide into the -15 C to -20 C range Saturday and Sunday mornings.

We’ll get to a high near -12 C on Saturday, but some milder air will start to move in late Sunday and that should boost temperatures to the -5 C range by early Sunday evening.

Milder air sticks around next week and daytime highs will be in the 0 C to -5 C range with a chance of some flurries or light snow almost every day next week.

The precipitation on Monday/Tuesday looks more likely to be flurries (as opposed to heavier snow).

We get a better chance for some significant accumulation towards the end of next week.
