Morning clouds and even a few scattered light flurries in parts of the Edmonton region this morning.
No significant snow expected today, but there’ll probably be a lot of fresh snow on the ground by Friday morning.
More on that in a moment.
Temperatures stayed mild overnight and so we should get to around 3 or 4 C for an afternoon high in the city with some sunny breaks.
NW Alberta gets a shot of snow Wednesday, potentially 5 to 10 cm of accumulation and we may see some flurries in the Edmonton region Wednesday (especially late in the day).
But, most of the Edmonton-area snow will hold off until Thursday. Temperatures still on the mild side (high near zero) Wednesday, wind some afternoon gusts around 30 km/h.
THEN...heavier snow develops in a broad area from around Edmonton south through Red Deer and Calgary and east towards Cold Lake/Lloydminster.
We’ll very likely have snowfall and/or winter storm warnings issued for areas within that zone with the hardest-hit areas getting upwards of 20-30 cm of snow and wind gusts in the 40-50 km/h range.
If you’re planning highway travel south or east of Edmonton on Thursday, start thinking about cancelling or re-scheduling if you can.
At this point, I think Edmonton WILL get a significant snow & wind event...but not the worst of the storm.
We’ll likely see between 5 and 15 cm of snow across the Edmonton region with wind speeds of 20 gusting to 40 km/h.
The trajectory of the storm could change, but it looks like the heaviest snow will probably be in areas to the south and east of Edmonton (and back through the foothills WNW of Calgary).
Colder air is the other part of the story.
After the snow, we get a string of days with afternoon highs in the -5 to -10 range and mornings in the -12 to -17 range.
That colder weather will stick around right through the weekend.
