Edmonton weather: Mild spell ends with some snow tonight

Cory Edel explains when temperatures will shift in Edmonton.

Temperatures should get above 5 C for one more day in Edmonton. Then...we’ll settle into a more seasonal pattern of temperatures for Friday, the weekend and next week.

An area of low pressure is spreading snow across northern Alberta today with the possibility of a few centimetres of accumulation around High Level and around or just north of Fort McMurray.

We’re also expecting some significant snow for higher elevations through the mountain parks where a snowfall warning is in effect.

Parts of the Icefields Parkway could see upwards of 30 cm of snow through the day. Marmot Basin should also see a good dump of snow, while Jasper townsite will probably get more rain than snow.

Areas around Hinton, Nordegg, Grande Cache, Swan Hills will also see some snowfall accumulation.

The precipitation zone is expected to drop through the Edmonton region tonight and snowfall accumulation and duration is a bit uncertain.

It doesn’t look like we’ll see a significant accumulation, but there may be a bit of snow on grassy areas when we wake up Friday morning.

Major roadways should be mostly wet overnight and then icy as temperatures drop early in the morning. Side roads, parking lots and sidewalks could have a bit of snow on them.

Skies will clear through the day Friday and we’ll get a degree or two above 0 C briefly in the afternoon.

Gusty wind’ll be a big factor in Friday’s conditions as gusts pick up overnight and should be in the 40-50 km/h range through much of the day Friday.

Calmer conditions and daytime highs in the 2 to 4 C range for Saturday/Sunday with a bit of sun.

Then... highs settle into the 2 to -2 C range for Monday-Friday next week.

After tonight, Tuesday looks like the next best chance at seeing some snow in the Edmonton area.
