Edmonton weather: Mild air returns, but it’ll be gone by the weekend

There’s a fresh coating of snow (and some ice) in and around the Edmonton area this morning.

As the warm front went through EARLY in the morning, we had bands of freezing rain and flurries develop.

We’ll stay on the warmer side of that front through today and Thursday with temperatures climbing up around the freezing mark later today and staying there overnight and through the day Thursday.

An area of low pressure in northern Alberta will drop a couple centimetres of snow on northern Alberta, especially the northeastern corner of the province today.

AND...there may be some light snow in Edmonton this afternoon on the southern edge of that system. Otherwise, just cloudy through the day.

Some more light snow and rain pushes through the Edmonton area on Thursday and the front drops back to the south later in the day.

So...we’ll be back into some colder, arctic air for Friday/Saturday and early Sunday.

Temperatures will drop to the minus teens by Friday afternoon and we’ll be stuck in the minus teens all day Saturday.

Milder air should start to move back in from the west late in the day Sunday and we’ll return to highs near 0 C for Monday/Tuesday of next week.

Today and Thursday’s precipitation shouldn’t amount to much more than 1 cm to maybe 4 cm of snow.

Friday could be a different story. The low-pressure system should be way off in southern Alberta, so that’s the part of the province that will likely pick up the heaviest snow.

But...there’s the POTENTIAL for several centimetres of snow as far north as the Edmonton region. As of right now, the confidence in that is fairly low, but we’ll be keeping an eye on it.
