Edmonton weather: Heavy snow coming Wednesday, followed by a deep freeze

According to Cory Edel's forecast, the snow and cold are making their way back to Edmonton.

It’s not a great day to be on the roads, but we’ll get a bit of a break in the weather today before getting walloped with heavy snow Wednesday.

Monday’s sloppy and slushy mess was followed by a flash freeze in the evening as temperatures plummeted and we got some freezing rain followed by a couple centimetres of snow.

Note: Monday’s high of 8.5 C was the second-warmest Dec. 15 on record in Edmonton. Only Dec 15, 1980, was warmer at 10.4 C.

We’ll get a bit of clearing this afternoon and temperatures will climb to around average (high near -5 C) this afternoon.

A snowfall warning (yellow level) has been issued, but we won’t see any heavy snow today...that warning is for Wednesday.

The warning zone stretches from Grande Prairie/Grande Cache southeast through Whitecourt/Edson and the Edmonton areas, as well as the Ponoka/Stettler/Hanna areas.

A broad area of 10-20 cm of snow will hit those regions through the day Wednesday and it’ll be accompanied by some gusty wind.

Snow will start tonight in the northwest and then move southeast through the day Wednesday.

For the Edmonton area, snow will start sometime in the morning. The heaviest snow will fall late morning and early afternoon. It’ll taper off late in the afternoon or early in the evening.

Most of the city will probably end up closer to 10 cm than 20cm. But, it’ll definitely be a significant dump of snow.

We’ll get another shot of snow in the Edmonton area Thursday evening and that could be 2-5 cm of accumulation.

After all that snow...we go back into a deep freeze for several days as daytime highs drop back into the -20s.

Morning lows will be in the -25 C to -30 C range through the weekend and into early next week.
