Edmonton weather: Change comes this weekend

Time change and a weather pattern change coming this weekend as some cooler air gets set to drop in.

We’ll be sunny and warm again today and Saturday, with highs near 10 C both days.

A few waves of light snow will push across northern Alberta today and Saturday. As a cold front slides south, we get slight chance of a shower Saturday evening.

That turns to a chance of some showers turning to wet snow through the day Sunday.

There’s still a fair amount of uncertainty with the Sunday afternoon temperature, but I think we’ll probably be around 4 or 5 C for a high.

It may not FEEL all that nice with some gusts and that chance of afternoon snow, which could actually turn into a couple centimetres of accumulation by early Monday.

An area of low pressure moving across southern Alberta on Monday will produce some snow on it’s northern edge.

That’ll likely be a significant snowfall for parts of the foothills and mountain parks and there’s still a chance of some 5-10cm in parts of central or north-central Alberta.

The latest model guidance suggests that heavier snow will probably stay south of the Edmonton region, so I’ve backed off to a chance of flurries for Monday in the city.

But...we’ll have to see where exactly that system develops before having a really solid handle of where the heavier bands of snow will be.

Temperatures will drop back to around or slightly below zero Monday, then rebound slightly Tuesday.

The real cool spell begins Wednesday as we start a string of days with highs in the -2 to -5 range.

Edmonton hasn’t had a sub-zero daytime high since Feb. 19. So, we’re not looking at a “deep freeze”. But, it’ll be a big change from these past two weeks.

Once that colder air settles in, it probably sticks around for a while. It’s very likely that we’ll have daytime highs below zero for about a week (through to around March 20).

That’s the weather change that’s coming. And then there’s also the time change.

Daylight Saving Time begins early Sunday morning as clocks “spring forward” one hour.
