Edmonton weather: Above-average temperatures are back and sticking around

Cory Edel's forecast for Edmonton is looking seasonal.

It’s another frosty morning across the Edmonton region and in central and northern Alberta.

But, temperatures will start to rise quickly and we’ll be around 8 C by lunchtime and up in the 13 C range late this afternoon.

That’ll put us a couple degrees above average and it’ll get even warmer on Thursday.

There’s a warm front approaching from the northwest that’ll push a bit of cloudcover through the Edmonton area late this morning/early this afternoon.

Those clouds should clear out this afternoon and we’ll be sunny to start the day Thursday.

Then...some increasing cloud Thursday afternoon ahead of an area of low pressure that’ll bring some afternoon showers to NW Alberta.

In the Edmonton region, we might get a few spotty showers Thursday evening.

Daytime highs settle into the 10 to 15 C range for Friday-Sunday with a mix of sun and cloud.

There’s a fair amount of uncertainty with the Sunday outlook. The GFS model is aggressive with a low-pressure system over southwestern Alberta pulling some warm air north into the Edmonton area and boosting temperatures close to 15 C.

BUT...the GDPS is painting a different picture and keeping temperatures closer to 10 C for a high on Sunday.

So, we’ll see how that develops. Either way, there’s a chance of some showers late Sunday (possibly some snow in west and northwestern Alberta) and a short-lived cool down early next week.

Looking LONG range: We’ll probably get a single-digit high Monday, but then it’s likely that daytime highs will be in the 10 to 15 C range for Tuesday-Friday of next week.

Bottom line: No significant cold spell coming and no real chance for snow in the Edmonton area. (Although we could have some accumulating snow in parts of northern and western Alberta by the end of next week.)
