An Edmonton man will spend five-and-a-half years in prison after pleading guilty to sexual crimes involving his own son.

The 38-year-old, who cannot be identified to protect the identity of his son, pleaded guilty last March to sexually touching his young son, making and publishing child pornography and possession of child pornography.

The man’s crimes came to light when a woman he was talking to in Sherwood Park became the subject of a child sexual abuse investigation involving her then three-year-old child. She pleaded guilty in November 2023.

The Crown had argued for a seven year sentence for the man, while the defence asked for three years.

He was ultimately sentenced to two and a half years for sexual touching and three years to be served consecutively for making child pornography, with a credit for 57 days already served.

He will be subject to a number of conditions upon release, including not being with 100 metres of his son.
