N.L. Justice seeks outside lawyers to handle murder case

Published:

Police investigate the scene where 63-year-old Larry Wellman was fatally shot at a hotel bar in St. John's on Oct. 3, 2015.

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. -- Newfoundland and Labrador's Justice Department has called on prosecutors from Nova Scotia to handle a murder case due to a potential conflict.

Brandon Phillips was charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery after 63-year-old Larry Wellman was fatally shot at a hotel bar in St. John's on Oct. 3.

Police have said Wellman was trying to intervene in a robbery when he was shot.

Donovan Molloy, director of the prosecution division, says the request was made to ensure public confidence in the administration of justice.

But he would not reveal details about the potential conflict since the matter is before the courts.

Chris Hansen, a spokeswoman for Nova Scotia's prosecution service, would only say that two Crown attorneys have agreed to handle the case.

Phillips is due in court Friday, when it's expected his lawyers will request a date for a bail hearing.
