Warm and windy: Gusts over 100 km/h possible in southwestern Alberta

Wind warnings have been issued for areas in central Alberta, as well as the southwest corner of the province.

West winds will be intense across most of the region Thursday with gusts of 90 km/h possible in the foothills west of Calgary as also in communities south of Calgary.

Areas in the far southwest corner of the province - including Waterton, Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek - could see wind gusts up to 110 km/h.

In the northern portion of the province, a low pressure system has formed and its associated leading cold front and trailing warm front have prompted snowfall warnings, winter storm warnings and freezing rain warnings due to the strength and opposing air masses.

The same system will track toward central Canada over the next 36 to 48 hours and is expected to produce heavy amounts of snow across Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

In southern Alberta, temperatures will sit near the mid-teens across most of the region on Thursday.

This warmer trend will continue until the end of the weekend.
