Tuesday’s early morning temperature in Calgary more than 15 degrees warmer than average

More warm(ish) weather in Calgary. Jodi Hughes has a look at the five-day forecast from the Sky Watch Weather Centre.

As expected a shifting weather pattern that included persistent westerly flow across most of Alberta, is elevating temperatures.

Communities in Calgary were as warm as 3 C early Tuesday, compared to the normal overnight low of -15 C.

Light snow fell in central and southern Alberta overnight, forming along the southern edge of a trough supporting Arctic flow into central Canada. That same system to the east prompted extreme cold warnings for Manitoba and Ontario Tuesday morning.

Throughout the day Tuesday warmer air will continue to track west to east along the southern border of the Prairies.

More snow is likely across Alberta later Tuesday, potentially forming a narrow band of heavy snow from the northwest to the southeast.

A snowfall warning was issued for the Cypress Hills region south of Medicine Hat “with total amounts of 10 to 20 cm (of snow) expected.”

Calgary could see some light and scattered flurries Tuesday with a greater chance of snow on Thursday.

Temperatures are expected to remain warmer than average, which will continue to help with melting.

However, icy sections could form in areas like parking lots and sidewalks, especially those in shadier areas or early in the day.
