Second of two brothers guilty of manslaughter in 2023 Copperfield stabbing death

The second of two brothers connected to a 2023 stabbing death in southeast Calgary is guilty of manslaughter.

He pleaded guilty on Friday, defence lawyer Andi Urquhart confirmed.

Though he was 18 years old at the time of the incident, he cannot be identified, as doing so would identify his younger brother, who was 16 years old.

His younger brother was convicted of manslaughter this past December and sentenced in July.

The older brother will be sentenced next month.

Danillo Canales Glenn was 18 years old when he was pepper-sprayed, assaulted and stabbed to death at a Copperfield basketball court on Sept. 5, 2023.

Both brothers were arrested in connection with Glenn’s killing the following day.

They were both originally charged with second-degree murder.

The Crown initially planned to seek an adult sentence for the younger brother but reconsidered.

At the younger brother’s sentencing, the Crown pushed for two years in jail on top of time served.

The defence pitched a 26-month sentence including a mix of time served and community supervision, and his immediate release.

He ultimately received an additional year in jail followed by six months’ community supervision.

Sentencing for the older brother is currently scheduled for Dec. 5.
