Marathon of Sport brings together Special Olympics athletes, businesses, volunteers for fundraiser

Over 300 athletes participated in the Marathon of Sport Saturday at Mount Royal University

One of the city’s biggest inclusive sport fundraisers brought together competitors for a good cause Saturday.

The Marathon of Sport sees each team paired with special Olympic athletes as they take part in more than a dozen different sports.

From dodgeball to street hockey, to basketball and soccer, more than 300 people took part at Mount Royal University on Saturday.

They’re hoping to raise $175,000 this year for provincial and national special Olympics programs.

Athletes say the support is much needed.

“Because it helps to spread awareness, especially,” said Darby Taylor, who’s a Special Olympics Alberta athlete advisor. “Back to me about having Special Olympics as well as my favorite organization, diving. And if it wasn’t for Special Olympics, I don’t think I would be be competing.”

“Marathon of Sport is so much more than a fundraiser - it’s a celebration of inclusion, connection, and community,” said Marathon of Sport volunteer event director Nathan Smyth. “Seeing participants and Special Olympics athletes come together as teammates creates such an incredible atmosphere, and we’re excited to continue growing that impact here in Calgary.”
