International Turban Day was created in 2004 by the Sikh, following negativity to anyone wearing a turban in the wake of 9/11.

While many cultures wear turbans, Sikh wear theirs every day.

Stations were set up with food and activities.

Several musicians were also on hand performing Sikh music.

For members of the Sikh faith, events like these are important to promote knowledge and understanding.

“It allows for the conversations to happen with other cultures—the students who are curious about, like, what land, what colour, why different styles and all this stuff,” said Gurpreet Singh, Sikh Society of Lethbridge Alberta president.

“So when they’re sitting there getting the turban tied, then they have that time where they can experience all these things themselves, and then it allows for about five minutes of conversation as well.”
