Impairment, speeding alleged in multi-vehicle crash in northeast Calgary

Calgary police allege a man was impaired and speeding when he blew through a red light late Wednesday night and caused a multi-vehicle collision.

The man, who is in his 20s, now faces charges.

Wednesday’s incident occurred shortly before midnight at the intersection of 16 Avenue and 68 Street N.E.

According to police, the man, who was driving a Ford F-350, “was travelling westbound on 16 Avenue at a high rate of speed and entered the intersection at 68 Street N.E. when the light was red.”

Police say he struck a Honda Civic driven by a man in his 40s southbound on 68 Street through the intersection.

Police say he then struck a Nissan Versa, driven by a woman in her 20s, in 16 Avenue’s eastbound turning lanes.

And police say he “made contact with” another Honda Civic and “may have also connected” with a GMC Cutaway.

The drivers of the first Honda Civic as well as the Nissan Versa were taken to hospital, having sustained minor injuries.

The man now accused of impaired driving and speeding was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

“Impairment and speed on the part of the Ford F-350 driver are believed to be factors in this collision,” police said.

“Charges are pending.”

Police also say the intersection where Wednesday’s incident occurred “has proven to be a dangerous location.”

“This summer, we submitted a business case exemption request to reactivate the Intersection Safety Camera (ISC) for both red-light and speed-on-green enforcement at the eastbound and westbound intersections of 16 Avenue at 68 Street N.E.,” police said.

“The business case was approved and the ISCs were reactivated on Friday, Oct. 3, 2025.

“In 2024, 37 collisions were reported at this intersection. Between January and July 2025, speeds of up to 192 km/h were recorded at this intersection, in the posted 70 km/h zone.”
