An investigation is underway into a Sunday morning housefire in the Calgary community of Renfrew.

At around 11:55 a.m., crews responded to reports of a possible housefire on the 100 block of Rupert Road N.E.

They were met by occupants of a single-storey home with basement suites who said there had been a fire in the lower level of the house.

Crews discovered smoke coming out of multiple openings and forced their way in, where they discovered the fire in the kitchen area and quickly brought it under control.

All the residents were able to get out safely, apart from two cats.

Fire crews found both cats, who were unharmed and took them out.

The fire was confined to the lower suite, but damage from smoke was extensive throughout the house.

Crews remain on scene helping with the investigation.
