Father calls for justice after man accused in son’s death charged in new crash

A grieving father is frustrated the accused in one vehicle collision is now charged in connection with another.

The father of an 18-year-old killed in an alleged impaired driving crash is outraged the man accused in his son’s death is now charged in connection with another crash.

Kane Anignostis Burrows, 19, out on bail on charges of impaired driving causing death and impaired driving causing bodily harm, is now also accused of fleeing a traffic stop and crashing into several parked vehicles last week.

Zachary Legault’s father, Marc Legault, spoke with CTV News Calgary about his heartbreak and frustration.

“When I heard about the latest crash, I wasn’t shocked—just angry,” he said.

On Dec. 23, 2024, Zachary was a passenger in a BMW travelling along Glenmore Trail S.W. when it veered onto the shoulder and struck a stationary crane.

Zachary died, and another passenger in the vehicle sustained minor injuries.

The crane operator was unhurt.

Burrows was charged in March in connection with the crash.

His bail conditions state he is not to consume alcohol or drive.

But police say Burrows was arrested last week after a BMW used to flee a traffic stop struck the rear of a parked vehicle near Macleod Trail and 58th Avenue S.W., triggering a chain reaction that damaged seven other parked vehicles.

Burrows now faces new charges, including allegations of impairment and breaching his bail conditions.

Legault said last week’s crash shouldn’t have happened.

“He’s out—not supposed to be driving,” he said.

“I hope they just lock him up right away.”

Legault described his son Zachary as a young man who had just begun his career as a welder’s assistant and was excited about his future.

“He was starting his life; he had just bought himself a truck so he could make the road trip for work,” Legault said.

“My son will never live out everything that everyone else will be living.”

Burrows appeared in court in Calgary on Monday.

His lawyer, Alain Hepner, asked to adjourn the case for a week.

Hepner said he is reviewing the case after learning the Crown will seek to have all his client’s bail revoked.

“I am considering my client’s position with respect to judicial release,” Hepner said.

“It’s over for me now to do some interviewing, some disclosure reading and to determine his personal status and family status.”

Burrows remains in custody.

A preliminary inquiry into the December 2024 crash is scheduled for November.

Meanwhile, none of the charges laid against Burrows have been tested in court.

Calls for stronger consequences, community support

Heather Jurgens, vice-president of MADD Calgary and Area, called the latest charges “shocking and disgusting.”

Jurgens said many impaired driving sentences are “a joke” and that the issues with the system don’t start there.

“When they’re convicted, they barely see any jail time,” Jurgens said.

“Clearly, something needs to be done, because even the conditions aren’t being enforced, and that’s a place to start.”

Doug King, a criminology professor at Mount Royal University, said being accused of breaching bail conditions will weigh heavily in court.

“The judge is not going to take that lightly,” King said.

King said impaired driving offences have been on the decline for decades, which makes the multiple sets of charges Burrows faces unusual and troubling.

He said, given the nature of the various charges, all laid against one person, he questions what’s going on at home if the allegations prove true.

“That just tells me there’s a lot more going on with him than likely meets the eye, and it really is time now for family and his friends to step up.”
