Police eye excessive speed as factor in deadly Macleod Trail motorcycle crash

Calgary police are investigating a fatal crash on Macleod Trail that closed the road for several hours.

A motorcyclist is dead following a crash early Wednesday morning that shut down a major stretch of Macleod Trail South for several hours.

Emergency crews were called to southbound Macleod near the James McKevitt Road exit just after 12:40 a.m.

Police said the motorcyclist, a man in his 20s on a 2025 BMW S 1000 RR, struck the rear of a 2020 Hyundai Kona driven by a man in his 60s.

“The motorcyclist was thrown from the motorcycle and suffered fatal injuries,” police said on Wednesday afternoon.

“He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The driver of the vehicle was not injured and remained on scene.”

According to police, excessive speed on the part of the motorcyclist is believed to be a factor.

Impairment is not, police said.

A major stretch of Macleod Trail South was closed for several hours in the aftermath of the incident.

Investigation is ongoing.

Police also urged caution on the roads, given 2025’s numbers:

“To date in 2025, Calgary has had 27 fatal collisions with 27 total fatalities,” police said.

“Of those, six were motorcyclist fatalities.”
