Cougar warning issued for Waterton Lakes National Park

Parks Canada has issued a cougar warning in Waterton Lakes National Park.

Cougars have been frequenting the areas of Waterton Village, Linnet Lake and Prince of Wales trails, according to a bulletin posted on Tuesday.

Parks Canada recommends using special caution while travelling or camping the area, including:

  • Keeping children close;
  • Travelling in groups;
  • Carrying bear spray and/or a walking stick;
  • Remaining alert at all times, especially at dawn and dusk; and
  • Keeping pets leashed.

The warning is in effect until further notice.

Any cougar sightings should be reported to Parks Canada by calling 1-888-927-3367 or alerting parks staff.

Waterton Park is located approximately 270 kilometres south of Calgary.
