Cavalry, Forge renew rivalry in this weekend’s preliminary final

One of the best rivalries in the Canadian Premier League will heat up this weekend when Cavalry takes on Forge to see who’s going to the final.

Some players are just built for the playoffs—the bigger the game, the better they get.

For Cavalry, that player is Tobias Warschewski.

The big German continued his productive ways in the post-season, notching a pair of goals against York United and lifting Cavalry into the preliminary final against Forge on Sunday.

Warschewski loves to score goals.

“Every time it hits the back of the net, it’s a great feeling,” said the 27-year-old forward.

“We’re confident in ourselves, and I don’t know what it is, but I enjoy the big games.”

Renewing the Rivalry

Cavalry and Forge will face each other in yet another big game on Sunday afternoon.

The rivalry between these two teams is one of the best in the Canadian Premier League.

From the very beginning, the two teams didn’t like each other.

Cavalry head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. says it has just continued from there.

“There’s definitely no love lost between us come Christmastime,” Wheeldon said with a chuckle.

“I think it’s because we’ve played big games over and over again against each other.

“Sometimes there’s brilliance and sometimes there’s chaos, but I think between us there’s mutual respect that we bring out the best and worst of each other.

“If you’re going to go and lift that trophy, you’ve got to go through a hard road, and that’s the road that lies ahead of us.”

Peaking at the right time

Forge finished first in the Canadian Premier League with a 16-10-2 record and earned the right to lift the Canadian Shield.

But Cavalry played them tough during the regular season.

Each team won a game and they had two draws.

Forward Ali Musse thinks his team is peaking at just the right time.

“It’s good right now,” he said.

“We’re in a good space and everyone believes in the plan and the goal, and when you have this, you can do anything.”

Kickoff for Sunday’s game is 2 p.m.
