Calgary weather: Fog in the morning turns to snow in the afternoon

Environment Canada issued a fog advisory for Calgary. Gina Martin has a look at the five-day forecast from the Sky Watch Weather Centre.

Calgarians woke up to a fog advisory on Thursday morning with the low-lying cloud significantly reducing visibility for commuters.

The fog will mix out later in the morning and temperatures are expected to be warmer than initially forecast this afternoon with an above-seasonal high of 7 C.

On Wednesday, models predicted an upper atmospheric low-pressure system would track into Alberta on late Thursday morning. The system would drop our temperatures below seasonal.

However, it now appears that low is moving a bit slower than anticipated, pushing back our next snow event until later this afternoon around 4 p.m. right as many people are heading home from work and school.

The system is expected to bring up to 5 centimetres of wet snow to Calgary tonight, but lingering flurries will continue into Friday and Saturday where totals in the city could reach up to 10 centimetres.

Higher elevations like Banff and Canmore could receive between 20 to 30 centimetres.

Banff and a majority of central Alberta are under a snowfall warning.

Temperatures heading into the weekend will be a bit chilly but not terrible with highs of -4 C on Friday and -2 C on Saturday.

We will get back to seasonal on Sunday and see a bit more sunshine with a high of 4 C and winds out of the S.W. at 20-40 km/h.

Unfortunately for the astronomy enthusiasts, tonight’s total lunar eclipse will likely be obstructed due to the clouds, but the full eclipse will be between 11 p.m. and 1:30 a.m. MST in the off chance you are up at that time and there’s a break in the cloud cover!
