Calgary updates emergency scenarios list

Calgary's emergency management committee will receive a list of 66 risk events that the city faces as well as recommendations about how to handle them.

The City of Calgary has updated its list of possible emergency scenarios and the impact they’d have on Calgary.

The information is part of a presentation being given to the emergency management committee at city hall Wednesday morning.

The list contains 66 risk events, with 19 of them being considered high risk.

Most of the top risks are weather-related events like tornados, flooding and extreme heat.

Following last year’s feeder main break, water infrastructure failure was added to the list of high risks.

Flooding from the Elbow River was downgraded from high to low thanks to the construction of the Springbank Reservoir.

Extreme drought was downgraded from high to medium based on a reassessment of likelihood.

Wednesday’s committee presentation also looks back at the emergencies of 2024.

The Emergency Operations Centre was active for an unprecedented 76 days, supporting the response to the Bearspaw South Feeder Main break and Jasper wildfire evacuations.
