Calgary police investigate suspicious incident in house fire in Legacy

Calgary police are looking into the suspicious circumstances of a fire at home in Legacy. Mason DePatie reports.

Calgary police are investigating a house fire in the city’s southeast that killed a dog early Wednesday morning.

The Calgary Fire Department said it was first called to the home in the 0 to 100 block of Legacy Reach View S.E. around 5 a.m.

It sparked a massive response, with seven fire engines, police, EMS and other first responder vehicles attending.

The roads around the home were shut down, and neighbouring houses were evacuated.

According to officials, when firefighters entered the home, they found smoke but no flames.

Damage to the home is tough to see from the outside, but the siding is coming off one side of the house.

Fire crews were concerned about the structural integrity of the home, but have since ventilated and cleared it.

The circumstances leading up to the fire are deemed suspicious and police are leading the investigation, the CFD said.

CTV News spoke with a family who identified themselves as the homeowners.

They said they believe their dog did something in the basement to start the fire.

The pet died in the incident.
