Investigation underway into suspicious death of Calgary teen in Abbeydale

A homicide investigation is underway in Abbeydale. A 16-year-old boy is dead and police are looking for help piecing together what happened.

A Calgary teenager is dead and police are asking for the public’s help to help piece together the boy’s last hour and a half of his life.

Police are investigating the death of sixteen-year-old Carter Spivak-Villeneuve in the northeast Calgary community of Abbeydale.

Police said they were called to the 300 block of Abergale Drive N.E. at about 1:20 a.m. for reports of someone in medical distress.

On arrival, officers found Spivak-Villeneuve dead at the scene.

Friday morning, police blocked off Abergale Way N.E. and had police tape up around a group of trees behind Abbeydale School.

Evidence cones can also be seen marking drops of blood in the street in front of the trees.

Spivak-Villeneuve’s friends visited the spot where the teen was found Friday couldn’t believe he was gone.

They told CTV News that they were with him just hours before his death.

“It’s troubling,” said Acting Staff Sgt. Clark Budd, from the Calgary police homicide unit.

“This is a kid that should have had his driver’s license to learn driving and instead we are investigating his death. It’s troubling and sudden.”

Investigators are asking those in the area to check their property for anything suspicious and to share any dashcam or surveillance footage with police.

Specifically, they are looking for video from midnight to 1:30 a.m.

“We’re here for Carter,” said Budd, “And so we’re really truly asking for people to essentially help us. Timeline of what was he into? Who is he talking to? Things like that. So we’re looking for communities to help us figure out and bring some closure to Carter’s family.”

The death has left neighbours in shock, waking up to a crime scene Friday morning.

“I find it kind of scary,” said Brittanie Deere, who lives in Abbeydale. “Because it’s so close to home. I live around the corner, so seeing this is very creepy because I always go out alone, too, so it’s very definitely scary.”

The teen’s friends were inconsolable with grief on Friday, describing him as the nicest guy.

Further information will be released once an autopsy has been completed on the victim.
