The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating the circumstances of the death of a man in the custody of the Lethbridge Police Service.
Officials say the incident stems from a report of an unwanted person at a southside home on March 24.
Police were called to the location after a 59-year-old man appeared agitated and was acting erratically.
The suspect was physically restrained before his arrest and placed into the back of a patrol vehicle.
While officers remained on scene, the suspect fell unconscious.
“He was immediately removed from the vehicle and EMS attended, transporting him to Chinook Regional Hospital where he was admitted,” police said in a news release.
The man died on April 2.
ASIRT is now investigating the matter and will provide more information at a later date.
