S&P/TSX composite up in late-morning trading, U.S. stock markets also higher

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was up in late-morning trading, helped by strength in the base metal and financial sectors, while U.S. stock markets also moved higher.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 58.54 points at 33,697.41.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 272.10 points at 49,214.00. The S&P 500 index was up 55.20 points at 7,255.95, while the Nasdaq composite was up 240.89 points at 25,308.69.

The Canadian dollar traded for 73.44 cents US compared with 73.47 cents US on Monday.

The June crude oil contract was down US$4.75 at US$101.67 per barrel.

The June gold contract was up US$57.50 at US$4,590.80 an ounce.
