How to prepare for possible flooding with rain, mild temps in the forecast

Flood concerns are on the rise with upwards of 25 millimetres of rainfall expected this week, following weeks of record snow accumulation across the region.

Residents are encouraged to take proactive measures to help prevent flooding.

"Over the next couple of days, heavy rain and warmer temperatures are expected, which make localized flooding in low-lying areas and water pooling on roads possible," the Town of Innisfil noted on Tuesday, adding, “The frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb rainfall and snowmelt.”

To prepare for the spring thaw, the Town has removed snow from areas with limited drainage, clearing snow and ice from culverts and catch basins, and making sure pumping equipment is ready if needed.

“Residents are urged to remain vigilant and take precautions to mitigate the potential risk of flooding, especially in flood-prone areas,” the Town stated.

Residents are advised to routinely clear debris from culverts and ditches along properties to help drainage, test sump pumps, consider installing back-up power systems, be cautious around any waterways, and stock up on essentials in case water levels make street access difficult.

Environment Canada issued a special weather alert for Tuesday, stating rain could be heavy at times starting Tuesday night and persisting through Wednesday evening.

The weather statement includes a risk of thunderstorms Wednesday.

The agency anticipates daytime highs to climb to 8C Wednesday and remain above zero until at least the weekend.
